This oxidized medal is approximately 1.8cm in size and features the image of Saint Benedict on the obverse, holding a cross in his right hand and the rule of his order in his left.
On either side of the saint are the words "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" (Cross of the Holy Father Benedict). Likewise one sees a chalice out of which a serpent and a raven come out. On the outer edge is the prayer "Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur" (When we die, may we be strengthened by his presence)

In the middle one reads: "Ex. SM Cassino MDCCCLXXX" (From Sacred Mount Cassino 1880).

On the back is the cross of St. Benedict with various abbreviations
CSPB "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" (Cross of the Holy Father Benedict).
CSSML "Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux" (The Holy Cross shall be my light). On the pillar of the cross.
NDSMD "Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux (The dragon shall not be my guide). On the crossbar of the cross.
On the outer edge, from top to right:

PAX "Peace"
VRS Vade Retro Satana (Back Down Satan)
NSMV Numquam Suade Mihi Vana (Never seduce me into vain)
SMQL Sunt Mala Quae Libas (Bad is what you give)
IVB "Ipse Venena Bibas" (Self drink the poison)

The Saint Benedict Medal is one of the sacramentals recognized by the Church. These are "holy signs by which, in a certain imitation of the sacraments, effects, especially of a spiritual nature, are signified and obtained through the intercession of the Church."

Thanks to the large eyelet, it is easy to attach to a chain or bracelet.
